NZL wins Young Rider Trans-Tasman 2010

Michelle Battams, Monday, 26 April 2010

Unfortunately for AUS, the NZL team have come away with the Young Rider Trans-Tasman trophy again in 2010. Final team scores were NZL 173.4 and AUS 195.8.

After losing both Tegan Lush and Lauren Balcomb, the pressure was on the remaining three AUS riders for the Jumping. NZL were 5 rails in front going into the Jumping phase, and all three remaining AUS riders put in fantastic efforts, with Jessica Manson jumping clear and both Elizabeth Moore and Crystal Conning with only four faults each.

NZL were also down to three riders after the withdrawal of Simon Gordon and Devan Wilson. The pressure was on the remaining riders to maintain the lead, and they did not disappoint. Ashleigh McKinstry and Douglas Thomson both had great clear rounds, and Larissa Srhoy only 8 faults, thus ensuring the title for 2010 went to the Kiwis.

Even though the Kiwis came out in front, the Australian riders put in great performances and should be proud not only of their riding, but also their conduct whilst representing Australia at such an event.

In individual placings, Jessica Manson's fantastic performance saw her finish in second place in the competition, just .7 penalties behind the winner, Ashleigh McKinstry. Crystal Conning finished in 5th place on 62.7 and Liz Moore in 7th place on 77.

Many thanks go to the organising committee from Eventing Canterbury for being such wonderful hosts and running a fabulous event, and of course to Equestrian Sports New Zealand for their involvement in assisting the AUS team during their stay in NZL.

We look forward to reclaiming the title in 2012!!

Cross Country day at the Trans-Tasman in Christchurch was wet, windy and freezing cold! In very difficult conditions, the Kiwis managed to move in front of the AUS team, with the scores after Cross Country as follows: NZL team 165.4 and AUS team 187.8.

Tegan Lush and Tempus Fugit were the first to go for Australia, looking great until they came to fence six, and came unstuck. Tegan had an unfortunate fall and was therefore eliminated.

Second to go were Elizabeth Moore and Sebastian Bach who put in a lovely clear round with just 12.4 time penalities. Crystal Conning and Marcus Aurelius were next, also producing a great clear round with no time penalities.

Jessica Manson and Legal Star also had a great clear round with no time penalities.

Last to go were Lauren Balcomb and Kootamooto, who were leading after the Dressage, They were producing a lovely clear round until a few fences from home when Lauren had an unfortunate fall, which resulted in a broken thumb, concussion, and a damaged knee.

The Kiwis also had bad luck, with Devan Wilson's horse suffering a wound to its leg, and Simon Gordon having two refusals and time penalities.

The Kiwis are leading heading into tomorrows competition.

Individually, Jessica Manson is sitting in third place after cross country, Crystal Conning in fourth and Elizabeth Moore in ninth place.

More to follow tomorrow.

16 April 2010

Australasia's leading young Event riders will be in action over Anzac weekend for the Trans-Tasman Young Rider Challenge as part of the New Zealand Community Trust South Island FEI Three-Day Event at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island.

The following combinations will depart AUS on Monday 19 April and compete 23-25 April.

  • Lauren Balcomb and Kootamooto
  • Tegan Lush and Tempus Fugit
  • Crystal Conning and Marcus Aurelius
  • Elizabeth Moore and Sebasitan Bach
  • Jessica Manson and Legal Star

Held bi-annually, the Trans Tasman Young Rider Challenge showcases Eventing’s champions of the future. Its addition has added a new dimension to the NZCT South Island a FEI Three Day Event, traditionally a highlight of the South Island Eventing calendar.

The Trans-Tasman Young Rider Challenge will run within the CCI2* competition, making for an interesting class. Given the Australians lost the series on home soil at Camperdown in 2009, expectations are high for some top class competition.
The New Zealand team of Simon Gordon, Ashleigh McKinstry, Larissa Srhoy, Devan Wilson, Douglas Thomson and Charlotte Grayling will certainly have their work cut out to retain the trophy.
Outside of the Trans-Tasman competitors the Tavern Harewood CCI2* will also include a number of the country’s top Eventers vying for top honours and vital qualifying scores for the NZ National Three-Day Event in Taupo.
The competition gets underway on Thursday April 22 with the prestigious Saddlery Barn South Island Young Eventer at 1pm, followed by a public course walk with Olympian and World Champion Blyth Tait at 3pm. The South Island Three-Day Event proper will be officially opened by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker at 9am on Friday, April 23, just prior to the trot up, followed by the dressage phase.

Good Luck Aussies!!
