Neil Kennedy’s beautifully designed course gave the three-star class an opportunity to test their skills before Adelaide CCI 4* next month.
There were 25 entries in the CIC 3* and the course rode well for most of the competitors with 16 clear cross-country rounds.
"It is a great course," said Chris Burton. "It is just such a great feeling jumping big fences on a such a well designed track."
Chris Burton was the fastest of the day on the 13-year-old Thoroughbred Newsprint (by Rubiton) with just 0.8 time moving them up from 4th after the Dressage into the lead. One rail in the showjumping was good enough for them to win the class. Sam Lyle finished 2nd on his 12-year-old Thoroughbred Classic Mischief and 3rd on Interwin a 10-year-old Thoroughbred owned by Sue Weeks.
“It has been a while since we’ve been at Goulburn and it was just so nice to be back,” said Chris. “The Committee are fantastic. Goulburn is one of the greatest events in Australia.”
“I am really confident heading into Adelaide. Barry (Newsprint) felt great, he took me around the course.”
Chris led the CIC 2 * from start to finish on Walk the Line (aka Johnny). Chalking another one up for Thoroughbreds who are certainly not a fading light on the Eventing scene. Johnny is an 8-year-old ex-racehorse by Barathea (IRE).
Junior Rider Lauren Balcomb prevented it from being completely a male dominated prize-giving. Lauren finished 2nd on the Salute gelding Kootamootoo. Third in the CIC 2* was Chris Burton’s student and employee George Sheridan on the 12-year-old Woznme.
New Zealand ex-pat Blair Richardson and Ngamatea Beer were the CIC 1* winners. Second place went to Karen Irwin and Newman, 3rd to Stuart Tinney on Sue Walker’s Warmblood cross San Antonio.
“It was a tough one star,” said Blair “Very technical with a lot of arrowheads. My guy is not always so keen on them so he was either going to win or get eliminated!”
Luckily for Blair it was the former.
